Both Zephyr and Kai jolted awake at the sound of whining hyenas. Before either could get their wits about them, the yips and howls were chased away.

“That’s what I thought,” Rasia said as she emerged from the other side of the windship, unharmed and spear bloody.

Zephyr relaxed back in the bedroll, but Kai remained tense. Rasia slung her bow and quiver over her shoulder then marched off into the darkness. They heard one more painful yip before the Desert fell silent again.

Awake and unable to go back to sleep, Kai watched as Rasia reemerged on their side of the windship. She took a drink from her gourd and leaned her bow against the side of the hull. Not once did she look in their direction to see if the commotion had woken them. Instead, she remained close to the food.

Kai watched her lower into a fighting stance. She moved gracefully through the motions of her katas, flowing and weaving through the wind-shifts of smoke. So fluid and certain of every step anyone could have mistaken it for a dance. Meanwhile, Kai had always felt uncomfortable in his body. His lungs were not enough. His skin was too tight. Everything fit uncomfortably. But Rasia had such finite control over herself—from the tip of her toes to the twist of her hips. She was always aware of her balance, never falling unless intentionally giving herself over to gravity. Rasia even stopped with purpose. Kai could watch her all his days.

“Why don’t you go fuck her?” Zephyr grumbled out.

Kai’s face heated in embarrassment, and he turned away in his bedroll. He crossed his arms over his chest; he didn’t think he had been staring that hard. But his dick said otherwise.

“She’s not going to say no,” Zephyr said. “She’s been over you all day.”

“Rasia’s like that. She’s touchy.”

Kai heard Zephyr shift, and he peeked over his shoulder to meet Zephyr’s flat stare. “Kai. I don’t know if you were paying attention to the conversation earlier, but ‘kulls fuck each other all the time’, was an invitation to you. When we get back to the Grankull, once she earns her names, everyone is going to be hunting after her. You two have a whole Forging together. Enjoy it.”

“She’s busy.”

“Tell her I’m awake for my turn at watch. She won’t be busy then.”

Kai hid in the leather and linen of his bedroll. How was he supposed to stroll up and ask for sex? It seemed a little entitled.

He heard the crunch of sand, and Kai sprang up to stop Zephyr from going over to Rasia. But it had only been a trick. Zephyr stood over him with his arms crossed, then crouched to stare until Kai broke into a frustrated sigh. Kai dragged his hand down his face. “I’ve never initiated. I’m not sure how.”

“Stand up, walk over there, and ask. You already know she’s interested, so a little self-confidence isn’t too misplaced.”

Zephyr was right, of course. Kai and Rasia had had sex multiple times at this point.
